On the top of the hill one could find a statue of Agasthya sage withholding a stone crusher on one hand and a bowl of medicines on other hands.  Worshipers climb to the top and offer prayers to him. He belongs to one of the seven sages (Saptarishis) of Hindu ideology. He is considered the father of Indian traditional medicines and Tamil literature. The surroundings of the hill are occupied with a tribal community called ‘Kanis’. They are engaged in various activities conducted by the forest department.

There is also a story revolving around the hill is when all the sages (munis or maharishis) went to Himalaya for attending the wedding of Lord Shiva and Lord Parvathi the tilt to one side. Then Lord Shiva insisted Agasthya Muni to go the southern portion and balance the earth. He obeyed the commands. Gradually he liked the place and decided to reside there.

The Best Ever Houseboat Cruise across Ashtamudi Lake in Kerala: A Soothing Travelogue from Delhi

It was the first time ever that both me and my younger brother watching such a vast experience of water in such a serene environment. And we were in happiness that knew no bounds watching such a sight. When mom said that Kerala was the God’s Own Country, all of us thought that she has got biased opinions for her native place. But once we had reached that beautiful destination, we realized that what she was saying was indeed true. Although she is a Bhojpuri, she was born and brought up in Kochi, as our Naana used to work there during those years. She has always got boundless words when appreciating about the aesthetic beauty of Kerala.

So when we thought of a perfect place for our tour in puja holidays, it was she who suggested KeralaMoreover, my younger brother Chotu was having asthma issues so we could not choose any cold hill stations. Once the main location was confirmed, both I and dad were busy searching about the possible tourist sites in the place, where we could visit on our vacation. We got to know about the tour packages offered by a popular travel firm of Kerala called Dream Holidays as they had good ratings and attention-grabbing ads on the web. They had one of the best ratings among all other companies. Moreover, they had the packages to varied locations such as those based in hill stations, backwaters, beaches and whatnot. Quite surprisingly, most of them were at the cheapest rates.

cheap and best kerala tour packages

So on the very next day after Chootu’s school exams, we were at the airport in Delhi. I was also having semester break at my college and I never had to worry about the number of days that would take for our trip. Dad had also taken his weeklong leave from the office. From the Indira Gandhi International Airport on the scheduled date and time, all of us boarded a flight and reached the Trivandrum International Airport within a flying time of 3 hours and 20 minutes.  Since we had boarded an early morning flight, we were not feeling much hungry but were thirsty. The moment when we were moving out of the main building, we saw somebody standing with a placard showing ‘Gupta and family.’ Dad went up to him and confirmed that it was our tour guide. His name was Somadev.

As per the instructions given by him, we had to travel for around 2 and a half-hour of the journey. After moving some distance, we saw a roadside vendor selling tender coconuts. We pulled over the car and all of us sipped the natural drink. It was truly refreshing. Later in the journey when we had covered the urban spaces of Kollam city, we crossed over numerous bridges and sights on both sides were indeed scenic. I didn’t know whether that was a lake or river, anyways there were just too many water bodies whichever directions we turned our heads at. The next striking factor that I noted was that the greenery here can be seen nowhere else in the country! Chootu missed all of this, as he had slept after sipping that natural drink. Finally, we arrived at our resort where we to stay for our holiday in Kerala.

There were many smiling faces around us. All of them seemed friendly right from the very first moment. The staffs there welcomed all four of us with a flower garland and adorned with a pinch of Kumkum on our foreheads. Quite strangely, Chootu was getting intimidated at this friendly gesture for which all of us burst out laughing. As the resort was on the banks of the lakeside, it already had natural landscaping. Chootu was with dad when they went for checking-in, meanwhile, both I and mom took many selfies. Our guide was back to us when we were settling in. Later he informed was what we were badly waiting for. The houseboat ride across the Ashtamudi Lake!

cheapest kerala tour packages

The boat that we were to cruise was already moored at their private jetty. It looked classy and elegant. They were owned and maintained by the same resort that we had relied on our tour. We quickly rushed into the massive houseboat. Just then I got realized that we were provided with a boat with all the facilities that a suite room of a hotel is comprised. It had a living area, two bedrooms, one kitchen and a balcony. Everything was set beautifully and was spacious. The materials from which they were made were even more exciting. Out of curiosity, I enquired this to the guide. He said that they were made in traditional Kerala architecture with natural materials such as coir, bamboo and woods of coconut and areca nut trees.

Our houseboat started moving slowly. The sun was scorching then, but we were not at all feeling warm, as a cool breeze was hitting us from the lake waters. Coconut palms were lined all across the banks of the lake as most of them were seen slanting towards the water. A staff was there to help us with the cooking in the kitchen. After moving some distance it was halted and to our surprise, we saw him fishing with a traditional net. And for the first time ever, both I and my brother saw live fishes. Our guide later announced that those were pearl spots and large lake shrimps. Meanwhile, we saw various country boats and most of them were paddled manually. I thought for a moment that, the oarsmen would be healthy and the process would be fruitful during fuel price up.

According to our packages, the caught fishes will be cooked live and served to us. Those tempting aromas from the Kitchen made us hungrier. Within no time, the delicacies were at the table. They were ‘Karimeen Pollichathu’ and ’Konju Roast,’ which had to be savoured along with rice. They were supposed to be eaten with bare hands. Expect mother, all of us had a tough time in the venture. However, the distinctive taste of the spicy recipes made us forget all such difficulties. Once satisfying our tummies, we dozed off for some time. Our tour guide already informed us, the sunset viewed from these parts of the lake will be beautiful. He was right, they were indeed enticing. Witnessing the beauty of the lake, my mom revealed that it was her long lost wish to arrange my destination wedding on the beaches of Kerala! I was dumbstruck for her words. Anyways thank you Dream Holidays for making this trip beautiful and memorable and at the end of the confusing!

The Miraculous Stories that Made Me a Strong Believer of St. Sebastian of Kanjoor

Don’t ever think that lying at the bottom of the country; Kerala will remain unpopular among the Indians. More than any other Indian state Kerala has made a special place in the hearts of not only Indians but also of foreigners. I have been always surprised by what may be the reason behind such large popularity? Later I realized that it may be the colourful festivals and unique culture and traditions. And it is true. The state is blessed with 14 districts and each district is known for its dazzling festivals. Irrespective of the religion and creed all the natives together celebrate the occasions in a grand way. Thus make the state different from other places in the country. It is being a long time since my mother was wishing to attend the famous church festival of St. Sebastian at Kanjoor church located in Ernakulum district in Kerala. I just asked her where she heard the name and what the peculiarity of the church is. She asked me whether I remember the day when my cousin (i.e. my mom’s nephew) told me about the church and the miracles happened over there. I said I don’t exactly remember what he said but I know that he is permanently settled in Kanjoor with his family for years. She said every year the St. Sebastian’s festival takes place in the month of January in St. Mary’s Church at Kanjoor. She also said that the saint is very powerful. I was amazed at how he could be powerful when the main deity of the church is Mother Mary. And I also asked her to share any of the stories if she was able to recollect from her memory. Oh! Why not I will definitely she replied (from her words I understood she was desperately waiting for someone to share the stories as she got me she was very happy).

The famous St. Mary’s Church at Kanjoor which is located on the banks of Periyar River was built in the year AD 1001. Even though it is a Christian pilgrim centre the church was constructed in an ancient Hindu archaeological style. It also has copied the designs from Indian, Persian and Portuguese artworks. The sanctum of the church was made out of gold dust, fruit pulp, and rare plant leaves. The mural paintings of the Nativity, the Annunciation, Blessed Virgin Mother, the offering of Lord Abraham, the presentation of the Lord in the Temple and the Ten Commandments to Moses add beauty to the church. Apart from this the church also has a rare collection of paintings, manuscripts, and antiques. I asked her how could she describe the beauty of the church has she ever visited the famous pilgrim. She said during her school days, she visited this mesmerizing church with her siblings. During those days the travel to the church was a little horrible and it took long hours to reach the destination. The journey has now become easy. Nowadays people from various parts of the world visit the splendid pilgrim shrine by availing of tour packages from the famous Dream Holidays travel operators in Kerala. They curate the packages by inculcating the price of air tickets for travellers to visit the Saint of Kanjoor also known as Kanjoor Punyavan.

There were many incidents took place in the history of Kanjoor that highly reflected the miraculous power of the St. Sebastian. Out of the several incidents, only two stories have gained much popularity. She started explaining the story. Years back on the day of the festival the famous ruler of the local kingdom named Sakthan Thampuran made a visit to Puthiyedam Kovilakam in Kanjoor. He was deeply immersed in a conversation with family. At that time the fireworks from the church interrupted his conversation and made the ruler furious. Angry ruler commanded his warriors to throw all the saluting mortars (Kathina Vedi) into the river. The warriors did accordingly. After returning to the mansion the mortars started bursting. The furious ruler scolded his disciples for not obeying his commands. They said they never disobeyed his words and asked him to go near to the river. By seeing the mortars bursting in the river he realized his mistake and went to the church and paid obeisance. He offered Elephant Lamp (Ana Vilakku) made out of from an alloy of five metals (Pancha Loha).

Followed to it one more incident also took place. Years later the ruler asked to demolish the gatehouse (padipura) of the church. As soon as the demolishing started the elephant of the palace (Kovilakam) started destroying the gatehouse of the palace. Understanding his mistake the ruler apologized and donated a perpetual lamp (Keda Vilaku) to the church and for meeting the expense of the oil the ruler gave permission to possess the paddy filed of the palace without paying tax.

Another miracle that took place during the colonial period in the 18th century. Tipu Sultan visited Kanjoor and decided to destroy the St. Mary’s church. People over there begged the Tipu Sultan to not to demolish the church. If he attempted to do so the saint will punish him. But he didn’t hear anyone’s words. He even tested the power of the saint. He looked at the statue and asked ‘if the statue has divine powers let it speak to me’. Soon the statute replied ‘won’t you allow me to rest’. Hearing the voice Tipu Sultan left the place without destroying the church. And the incident has been mentioned on the walls in front of the church.

I told her to avail of the cheap and best tour packages to Kerala as soon as possible so that we could visit the church. But she asked me to wait until January. I asked why to wait for January. She told every year on January 19th and 20th the festival of St. Sebastian commences. And on 20th January after 2nd Holy mass, an eagle flies and it is considered as a glorious moment. I told her that I am going to book the packages for January in advance.

Our First Trip as Couples to the Alluring land of Kerala

We had a dreamy wedding after our planning that took like 5 years. I and Riya met during our college days. Even though we were coming from different states and were enrolled in different departments, we met and became good friends. It took us no time to know that we are best for each other and thus our love story began. I flew to London for my job after studies and Riya got placed during campus selection at Pune, her native place. We had a grand wedding ceremony in Delhi with our close relatives and friends, we were planning to make our honeymoon another grand period of our life. We wanted to visit an exotic location in India and after much thoughts, we finalised that it would be Kerala. I had to fly back to work in a month and Riya had only 3 weeks leave, so we had the best place in India itself for our honeymoon.

The wedding preparations itself were done after a lot of juggling. It was at that time that I told my friend Rajat that we have plans to select Kerala as our honeymoon spot. He suggested me to avail the help of a travel operator to plan out the trip in advance and even suggested Dream Holidays. We checked their tour packages from Delhi and both of us were quite impressed with the packages and services they were providing. The booking was done and on July 14 we set out for our trip at 6 in the morning and it took us only 3 hours to reach the Cochin International Airport. From there, they picked us at the right time and took us to the No. 18 Hotel at Fort Kochi which took more than one hour to reach because of the traffic. We had asked them specifically for this place because we have heard quite a lot about this place and it was easy to travel around the popular streets at Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.

Riya is a great lover of art and always used to talk about the art exhibitions happening in these areas. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale was something she missed as could not take some days off from her work because of the project she was supervising. We were lucky as other painting and sculpture exhibitions were happening at Kochi. The Kashi Art Gallery had some brilliant photography exhibition going on. We had some great food at the patio of the Kashi Cafe. At night we went to the Farmers Cafe at Fort Kochi itself and had the best organic food in the colonial setting.

Kerala packages

Our favourite locations at Kochi include the Fort Kochi Beach, Cherai Beach, Hill Palace, Bastion Bungalow, St. Francis CSI Church, Mattancherry Palace, Jew Town, Dutch Palace, and many more. The list can go on because it is such a great place with great ambience. The colonial architecture of the buildings and even its streets tells the story of Kochi’s history. Our guide had great knowledge of the places and I was more than happy to see Riya getting lost in conversations about the city’s history with him.

We then went to Alleppey and we loved the view of the palm-fringed shores more than the view of the Chinese fishing nets that we saw from Fort Kochi beach. At Alleppey, we were taken for a houseboat cruise in the backwaters which had furnished bedrooms with AC and a clean attached bathroom. It was when we reached here that we could see the continuous set of coconut groves – the usual image that we get when the place Kerala is mentioned. We had taken only the local ferry when we were in Kochi and that was a fascinating ride. At here, the Alleppey backwaters charmed us with its beauty and the serene and clear backwaters. The houseboat voyage and dinner at Farmers Cafe are our favourite honeymoon memories. Our guide said that a trip to Alleppey is not complete without visiting Kuttanad. Kuttanad surprised us with the farming that is done below sea level. A village tour in this rustic village listening to nature’s voices far from the noise of the cities filled us with happiness. We even tried canoeing from Kuttanad. Punnamada Lake is now one of our all-time favourite places. The seafood varieties served at Alleppey region is totally a trump card to lure more visitors to Kerala. We had some toddy (a kind of wine made from coconut) and the guide also took us to a place from where studied a bit about toddy tapping. We also visited Pathiramanal, Krishnapuram Palace, Alleppey Lighthouse and Marari Beach at Alleppey.

Riya always wanted to try trekking and paragliding and we were excited when we reached Munnar to try both of these. This popular hill station in Kerala has got many tea and coffee plantations which added the beauty of this lush green area. We had a trainer who helped us with the adventures. For trekking, the best spots are the Kannan Devan Hills, Chokramudi and Chummar. We could see the mighty landscapes of Munnar while soaring high during paragliding and the view was all about greenery – from the bird’s eye view as it is popularly known. The misty light breeze added the soothing effect that Munnar gave. The next time we are coming to Munnar to get an ayurvedic therapy as we could know that this place has a great record of perfect ayurvedic therapies done at its spas and resorts. We also visited Anamudi Peak, Mattupetty Dam, Eravikulam National Park, Echo Point, Pothamedu View Point, and so on. On our last day at Munnar, we took long strolls through the tea gardens where some of the scenes from my favourite movie Life of Pie was shot.

We headed back to Delhi after our ten days trip in Kerala with a lot of photos and many memories that will always top the best memories we had after our marriage. I think all of the newly-weds should take a trip like us and have a hassle-free trip with your loved one by availing the benefits of honeymoon packages to Kerala.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING YOUR KERALA TOUR

Travelling is the flavour of the present era and nowadays, tour operators take up the task of planning and executing your dream of travelling and exploring. They come with well informed and efficient teams who are ever ready to help you. As far as India is considered, the Kerala packages are considered as one of the most in-demand packages that tour operators handle. This is because Kerala has it all to satisfy traveller’s needs such as scenic beauty, serenity, a good climate, nice resorts, rich culture, and heritage, etc. In fact, visiting Kerala is often considered as a fulfilling experience by many. Thus most of the time, it is known as the gods own country and in order to get immersed in its divinity, not only from different parts of India but from around the world people come to Kerala. However, among them, honeymooners are the most in number.

kerala travel packages

When honeymooners search for Kerala tour packages, I confidently recommend Dream holidays as they are a master in formulating romantic and unforgettable tour packages for couples. They have numerous testimonials that speak of their ability to plan things in a tasteful way and being attentive to each and every need of the customers. They have included everything from beaches to mountains of Kerala in their honeymoon package and customizing the tour according to your needs is also possible with Dream holidays. But anyway, before talking to your tour operator it would be a good idea to gather up some information about the tourist attractions in Kerala. I have discussed some to the best of my knowledge in the below paragraphs including the beaches, backwaters, mountains and historical importance of Kerala.

kerala travel packages

If you search for beaches in Kerala, Kovalam and Varkala would top the search result but they are not the only beaches in Kerala. It is true that Kovalam and Varkala are the most developed beaches with a lot of interesting facilities for the tourists as there are various multi-cuisine restaurants, resorts, beach beds, and umbrellas, short courses in swimming, surfing, underwater yoga, etc. for tourists. However, the downside is they are too touristy and busy. I am not telling Kovalam and Varkala should be avoided because even with all that hustle and bustle going on, the beige sand still sparkle, silver water reflects and the coconut trees are lush greener than ever. Nevertheless, Kerala is also got many not-so-crowded beaches where you can laze around and unwind. If you are the kind of person who finds solace in peace, then you should definitely think of visiting Marari, Kappad or Bekkal beach, although three of them are in three different districts, unlike Varkala and Kovalam which are in the same district. In Marari or Bekal or Kappad, wearing a bikini won’t be a good idea as locals are not used to it but it’s a good place for going on long beach walks especially during sunrise or sunset times. Nevertheless, I think the best way to make the most out of any beach is to book a seaside cottage and stay in it. So that you can hear the waves and inhale the marine aroma all day long and go for swimming or sunbathe to flaunt a beautiful tan when you go back, whenever you wish. Kappad beach also boasts of a historical landmark as that’s where the Vasco da Gama landed during the 15th century and so it’s called the “Gateway to the Malabar Coast’’. The Bekkal beach has one of the largest forts known as the Bekkal fort and there are lovely pathways and well-maintained gardens. Marari beach is generally a fisherman’s beach and the colourful fishing boats and nets further add to its beauty.

Backwaters are also a major attraction in Kerala. The backwaters run all through the length of Kerala, passing many districts and each has a different charm and appeal. The fabulous backwaters with lush green plants growing in its banks, clear blue sky on the top, chirping of birds around, crisp cool air and swishing of coconut trees are what attract tourists like a magnet to Kerala’s backwaters. A houseboat cruising is the best way to savour all of this. It is also great to see village life on its shore. In fact, the houseboat often halts for some time in between the journey, so that the tourists will get a chance to see the village life closer and also to indulge in some traditionally prepared seafood available in the local restaurants there. Toddy, which is a local alcoholic drink fermented out of coconut is also very common in these villages and you can enjoy the unique taste of it if you want. Another way to make your houseboat journey further relaxing is to book an Ayurvedic massage too while cruising. The moving fingers of a skilled masseur and the aroma of the herbal oil along with the fresh breeze of backwaters will make your day lovely and undoubtedly, wash off all the stress in you. Vembanad, Ashtamudi and Valiyaparamba are the big ones among Kerala’s backwaters while Veli, Thiruvallam, Kumbalangi are the less popular ones. You can ask your tour operates about each of these backwaters and decide which are the ones you want to go.

There are a lot of palaces and other historical landmarks spread over the different districts in Kerala with Kochi being the most ravishing of all. Especially in Fort Kochi, the fusion of different cultures is so evident that it oozes a vibrant charm and vibe. You can still see the remnants of British and Portuguese cultures. Kochi also has the face of modern Kerala with the metro system, shopping malls, etc. When you are coming to Kerala it would be best to either arrive or depart from Cochin international airport as then, conveniently you can stay a few days after or prior to it in Kochi and explore the magnificent city.

Kerala is quite easily accessible to anyone as it’s got four international airports or if you want to club your Kerala tour with some tourist places in north India, it would be best to book a Kerala package or if you newlywed couples, a Kerala honeymoon packages from Delhi. I recommend Delhi because it is situated in the heart of India and Delhi itself is a tourist spot too, however, packages are available from other major cities of north India as well. So don’t hesitate to take a break from your busy life and talk to your tour operator about escaping to this wonderland.

The most celebrated bang of getting together with friends.

wayanad-story.jpg.image.784.410
Certain get-togethers turn out to be very special when we have stayed apart for so long and finally get to see each other. Such had been our get together that we had planned at Wayanad. 10 of us had finally planned to get together after college had been over and it had been 2 years of being the crazy self. Thankfully none of the girl gang had got married and hence we had been looking forward to having our bachelor girls hangout. The place had been decided such that the people working at Bangalore could also reach comfortably. All of us had weekends attached to our sick leaves for the tour and hence around 4 days had been planned where two days were required for the to and fro travel to the destination and two days for the sightseeing fun we could have. The planning and travel vehicle was booked through Seasonzindia so that we did not have to face last time hassle for a carefree journey. The 23-year-old set off from different places for the journey and all of us reached the resort that had been booked for the stay by 10 pm. The trip to Kerala of ours officially started the minute all of us had reached one room.
The night became ecstatic where we set up a campfire in the 17-degree Celsius climate and got to eat together just like the hostel days were being revoked. And then the next day we rose up and the journey began where we were picked up by the driver and we had been enjoying the weather that kept us cold. The first place of visit for us had been Banasura Sagar Dam. The largest earthen dam was beautiful and happened to have boat services due to which in groups we set off for a quick speedy cruise. The surroundings were very alluring and each breath felt like freshness party in the lungs. After we had got enough of posing in the place, we decided to return where the driver said us we could visit Meenmutty Waterfalls as per the itinerary. The falls was what unleashed the crazy part in us that we had been head over knee happy playing in the water. We spend a lot of time there and it was where a lot of tourists had been as well. When it was high time that we return, the driver called us up for otherwise we would just not leave the place at all.Karlad-Lake-Wayanad
Post lunch we moved forward with the tour and reached the Karlad lake on a long drive. The one exciting thing that had been there was the zip line on which all of us wanted to try the adventure out. the queue was quite long for it but standing in it, we made our own entertainment taking us back to the college days.  That was it for the time being where we had had enough of it and then reached each of our turns to go across the lake in a zip line. The safety jacket was put on and then we had the exciting adventure done and struck off the bucket list.  And that wa sit for the day where we were driven to our place of stay. The stay was another wonderful place where we got to be in a flora hotspot. A lot of trees and plants stood around of which the main had been coffee. It was a wonder that this is how coffee looked before it reaches crushed to us. Mangosteen and avocado trees had also been there from which we tasted the freshest of fruits. In fact, we felt more connected to the forest as well which was on one side where they had put wires of shock as elephants are known to be existing in the place. The people have also been wonderful hosts where they took us around and fed us with guava and litchis, everything fresh.Edakkal_Caves
Our first place to visit for the next day was Edakkal caves. The walk up to the caves was the most exciting of all where we rest on the rocks in the midway and clicked a number of pictures. Walking through the rocks had been exciting where we felt captivated by some sort of rock fort. The view had been beautiful with all the greenery around where the landscape shots turned out to be the best. By the time we reached back, we were super tired. After sipping some drinks from the street vendors, we walked to the car and asked the driver to drop us for an early lunch. And after gobbling some good food from hotel Jubilee our travel continues and we were taken to Jain Temple which was the main reason that we had remained true vegetarians until then. The architecture of the temple was photo worthy. Even though it was small, there was some sort of aura that kept us there for a long time before we headed off to the next place that had been the Muthanga wildlife sanctuary. And it turned out to be the most favourite to us out of all the places we had visited because of the fact that we had been indulged in the walk along the forests where we got to spot elephants, deer and peacocks merrily walking along their home. All of us were hardcore fans of animals and birds and we could not be more happy of seeing animals all happy at their true residence. We also took a  jeep safari through as walking long distance was not happening. Other than few exotic birds, we did not get to see anything more. That was it for the whole journeying as the end of it had been marked.jeep s
The best of get-togethers had hence been initiated where we knew that we had more of them to have in our lives. The hardest of everything had been to return back to the normal boring life. We packed our bags and were dropped at the bus station from where all of us had the buses booked to various destinations. The due amount that had to be paid to the tour planner was handed off to the driver where we also thanked him for bearing with our super excited screaming on the tour. Wayanad had been the perfect spot in Kerala for our tour and the amount of fun we had had was going to keep us going for another few months when we would end up planning the next trip. Since Kerala had been the best host, maybe we might return to some other destination in the state to make a bunch of memories.
