Unearthing the Hidden Histories of Eyyal in Thrissur District of Kerala

We bet that you are not to find the rare name of ‘Eyal’ in the list of any popular tourist destinations of Kerala. If at all you have heard about them, you might have read it in any history books that you had referred long back. It might be due to the excavated Roman coins datable to the very first centuries of AD or of the Burial Caves discovered from the place. Anyhow, the hamlet could be explored more for its nascent nature and virgin beauty. However, here we are going to discuss some prehistoric sites in and near the small village of Eyal, which is situated in the outskirts of Thrissur district in Kerala.

Ariyannur Stone Umbrellas

Belonging to the Megalithic period, when you come to this rare site of Eyyal, you could find the strangely placed huge stone structures known as Ariyannur Stone Umbrellas. In the regional language, they are better called Kudaikkallu. Moreover, in its visual appearance, you may note that they are going to look like large mushrooms bloomed out of nowhere. When counting the total numbers, they are actually six of them, but two among were severed damaged. No one exactly knows actually when and why were they constructed on such an irregular shape. However, it is believed that the monks who used to come at the site used to store their belongings under its shade, but there is no evidence to prove that. At present, they are under the protected list of historical monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India.

Harikanyaka Temple

A random visit to the ancient temple of Harikanyaka that is located to a few distances from one of the most visited temples of Kerala, Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur could say a lot about the intricate temple sculpting techniques followed here in the south of India. Moreover, it is believed that the ancient structures seen here were carved out by the all-time master craftsman of Kerala, Perunthachan. Even if they were built centuries ago, the very charm and the complexities of its unique architecture still remains. So a tour to the shrine will be worth enough to visit even if they are excluded from popular tour packages. The historical Hindu religious centre is dedicated to the deity Mohini, who is the virgin form of Lord Vishnu, as the goddess at the Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari Temple in Coimbatore.

Situated amid Wadakkancherry and Kunnamkulam, in Cheramangad, the Burial Cave that you get to sight here in Eyyal is double-chambered. Similar to the stone umbrellas of Ariyannur, the Burial caves to are believed to be originated in the Megalithic age that in a laterite boulder. Also, this pre-historic rock-cut cave does constitute a circular chamber, which can be accessed by a single entry. There exists an irregular bench in the chambers with no pillar at the centre. Furthermore, it from this historic site that the Roman coins up to 117 AD from 123 BD, which is of the Republican period were excavated. From the year of 2016, the burial cave is recognised and protected as a historical monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.

A small hilly area is situated in the Akathiyoor Kunnu near Eyyal, is now the region’s favourite spot to spend the evenings along with your family as there are no external noises to disturb you from the tranquillity of this place. Much to the surprise, you could also take your vehicles to the hilltop, so you take little toddlers along with you as there is no point of trekking here at hills also known as Kalasha Mala. If you are lucky enough, you could even catch a glimpse of charming peacock flying and relaxing at the rocks.  Even without the presence of the national bird in front of you, the mesmerising view from its summit is going to calm you in the evenings after the historic tour in the momentous village of Eyal.

The burial cave at Kakkad is one among the megalithic caves found in the nearby locations of Eyyal cave. However, they are a more sophisticated one than the latter, as they have got a flight of stairs to reach at its chambers through a narrow pathway.  With an opening in a circular shape at its ceilings, it looks different when looked from its exterior. From its outside structure, one could easily realise that they are indoors if dome-shaped.  At this cave of height about a typical man, on both sides of its entrance, you could find wide plaster-like projections. Also on the southern and northern sides, there is a rock-cut circular block and single sectoral bench respectively.

How to reach there: From Cochin International Airport, you could reach Eyyal within 2 hours via NH544 covering 74km. Moreover, the nearest railway is the Guruvayur Railway station is at a distance of 13.6 km. However, you need to travel up to 21.4 km to arrive at the major railway station of Thrissur.

Just like the prehistoric sites discovered from the village of Eyal, there are various unknown places in Kerala that are historically very crucial and significant. Like, say, the Kothukkal Cave temple in Kollam, the popular Edakkal Cave of Wayanad and many more. An ardent traveller needs to have that wanderlust to quest for such sites spread across the state. An Exhilarating Road Trip from Hyderabad to Kerala: A Delightsome Travelogue

The aftermath of a tiresome wedding session lasting for a couple of days, we were craving for some refreshing getaways to be spent in any other places. Besides, we were very particular of choosing a location with varied contrasts to that of Telugu cultures, traditions, places and everything. Furthermore, I and my husband had some conditions prior to our trip that it should not be any North Indian locations or boarding any straight flights to the destination.

It was in this instant that I got to know that the hills of Munnar in Kerala were surprisingly laid out by a delicate layer of snow during the past year’s winter. The beauty of this whole new version of the otherwise lush green hills was rather astonishing, which would be ideal for a romantic honeymoon. Usually, the state of Kerala is known for its tropical climate with most time of the year drenched in soothing monsoon. Therefore, tourists dropping in Kerala mostly get to visit its backwaters and its golden shores, as they would be readily included in their tour packages to spend their vacations. However, we wished to do something different and explore on our own. We finally decided to travel to the Munnar Hills from our hometown of Hyderabad and that too by road.

Since we only had limited time for our vacation, we set off our journey at a late evening in our own car. Most parts Telgana were covered in utter darkness expect the major towns of Mahbubnagar, Kurnool, Anantapur and Penukonda. Visiting these places in Andra borders were obviously excluded from our list as it was definitely not in our list, as we took the fastest road possible via NH44. Due to the numerous of tolls in the otherwise smooth path, it was almost midnight when we reached in the Electronic Capital of Karnataka, Bengaluru.

Bengaluru was like any other major cities of the country, in terms of their traffic congestion and the fastest growing infrastructure. Due to the time in which we arrived at this vast city saved us from this mess to a greater extent. On the wild path leading to Hosur, we got to realize that yet another state of Karnataka had also been left behind. Just then the name of Hosur just struck and later confused me that, isn’t’ that the same ‘Hosur’ in of Karanataka nearby Madikeri. The name was quite familiar to me as I had already visited a Samudri Ganesha Temple located there. However, this was a different place located in the borders of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

By early mornings, we reached the scenic locations of Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu. Again here too we could not experience the very essence of this beautiful ancient town. Later the first rays of the early morning sun were striking us when our car was very gently approaching towards Erode. Now, we were excited to journeying via the dense forest covers of Udumalpet once covering the temple towns of Thirvachi, Palladam, Avinashi and numerous other ones. We were almost in sync with our calculations of witnessing the dense forest regions of both Anamalai Tiger Reserve and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in broad sunlight. Consequently, we have succeeded in this very same venture also.

Up to these locations, the roads were not much challenging as the paths were laid out in plains. However, once we were about to cross the Kerala-Tamil Nadu borders, you will know about the very nature of the rocky terrains of this part of Western Ghats. Numerous hairpin curves on these roads will truly be testing most accurate driving skills of my husband. But he was definitely not in a mood to give up. Meanwhile, the deep gorges adjacent to the roads scared me.  From my research just before the trip, I had read that Chinnar is the sole rain shadow region in the state of Kerala

In our research, I had already noted down that a waterfall named Thoovanam is situated at this location is a must-visit site. For trekking up to the waterfall, we pulled over our car in the parking area across the Alampetty Check post. The staff at the check post then said that to catch a glimpse of the Thoovanam Waterfalls, we need to trek across the dark jungles for a whole of 4kms. We just felt that we were walking very close to nature at its lap. When the cascading waterfalls were closest to our view, it was indeed a pleasure for our eyes to watch the beautiful sight. The trekking is basically a guided program operated by the State Tourism Department of Kerala.

After the witnessing the surprising waterfall, we continued our journey via Marayoor, which has the only natural sandalwood forest among all the forest covers in Kerala. Here also we had to halt our travelling in the car, and had to catch a jeep that would take us to these rare forests. If we had opted for the other options of vacationing through the packages, we did not have to wait much in these kinds of places. But on the other hand, these halting could also give some rest to the former that had been plying all the way from Hyderabad. Along with us, we saw many other tourists enjoying the rich flora and fauna found only in these regions. Apart from that, we got to see a few ’Muniyaras’ which are the primitive cabins made of stone. Someone travelling with us on the jeep said Chinnar is home to a giant variety of flying squirrel and can be only be observed if you are lucky enough.

We were departing from the sandal forest covers of Marayoor and saw yet another signboard indicating the path that leads to Lakkam Waterfalls. However, we could not make it to visit them as it was already approaching the dusk. Mounting up to the waterfalls in such an hour will be futile and also dangerous. From there it did not take much to reach the popular hill station of Munnar. While we reached there, the temperature was very chilling and felt exhausted. We sole groped for a space to lie down after the eventful journey.

Before planning for any road trips, it is always advised to book your dates to any efficient tour companies like that of Lelagoon Holidays. By doing so you would be visiting every tourist spots in a location in an organized manner without missing any exciting sights!

Know how Kerala is a Suitable Tour Destination for the People of Hyderabad

Famously known as the ‘God’s own country’, Kerala is a state with the Arabian Sea on the west and the Western Ghats on the east. It is known for its unique tradition and culture. Its untouched scenic beauty, exotic locales, pristine backwaters, and serene beaches beckon tourists from across the world and serve as the perfect destination for a leisurely vacation. Apart from its tranquillity, Kerala is known for its abundant wildlife and elaborate temples. In fact, holidaying in Kerala will unfold an awe-inspiring experience with nature’s magic playing in front of your eyes. No surprise, the gods own country is among the top listed tourist attractions as well as a honeymoon destination in India. Kerala is believed to be a wonderful present from the Arabian Sea as the gorgeous beaches like Kovalam and Varkala are the pride of Kerala. The breathtakingly beautiful hill stations, enchanting waterfalls, lovely lagoons, meandering rivers, and awesome natural scenarios further add to the reasons for people considering Kerala as a paradise. Kerala is also very popular for high standard Ayurveda treatments, coconut water, and oils which tourists look forward to experiencing. However, the highlight of Kerala tourism for anyone visiting here, be it the honeymooners or families or solo travelers, it’s the cruise through the backwaters of Kerala. The scenic beauty you can enjoy will make you wonder if you are in heavens for a moment. Idukki dam is another spot you can pay a visit to as it is the first arch dam in India and the largest in Asia.

Although people from other states as well as countries visit Kerala, recently it is been observed that Kerala tour packages from Hyderabad are happening in large numbers especially honeymooners. The reason for this can be the relationship Kerala and Andhra Pradesh shares and I have listed them below:

  1. Climate

There is not much difference in the climate in Kerala and Hyderabad as both are usually hot. But however, there is a slight difference i.e. Kerala has a proper tropical climate whereas Hyderabad has a subtropical climate. Thus Kerala is more humid and more prone to rainfall than Hyderabad. This makes the people of Hyderabad use the same clothes and other things to use when they visit Kerala. They won’t have to spend a lot of money on preparatory shopping before visiting Kerala. However, don’t forget to bring an umbrella while visiting Kerala. Fears of health issues arising out of climate changes could also be kept at bay.

  1. Spicy Food

A person from both of the states is fond of spicy food and often appears in the lists of Indian states with spiciest cuisines. In Kerala, rice cakes and steamed cakes may feel bland and tangy, but it’s the curries that are so lip-smacking. Kerala has always lived up to its title when it comes to cuisine. Needless to say, Kerala’s foods are bang-on. In fact, Kerala is certainly a seafood lovers’ paradise. However, be ready for the lip-burning, tearing-inducing curries but you will undoubtedly love the flavors.

Now, Andhra Pradesh is nicknamed as the Mexico of India because of its fiery spice levels. Even the rice meals of Andhra are quite spicy. Some people believe it’s the Nawabi culture that results in red-hot meals.

However, this has been a boon when people of Andhra Pradesh visit Kerala as they are comfortable with spicy and hot foods and can also look forward to an exotic form of spicy food.

  1. Languages

Languages play an important role when we select a tour destination for us. We naturally feel a little difficulty in being around people speaking languages that seem Geek to us and on the other side of the coin, we may feel confident if the language is at least familiar. In addition, it makes it easier to communicate. This is in fact what makes Kerala a good choice when people from Hyderabad visit Kerala. Both Telugu and Malayalam belong to the Dravidian languages and have roots in Sanskrit. Both of the languages use 80% Sanskrit words and follow the same grammar pattern too. Interestingly, this makes 85% to 95% words in Telugu and Malayalam the same. However, there are some differences in slang and style. Interestingly, if we take any sentence in Telugu or Malayalam, most of the times there will be at least one common word. Therefore, although different, Telugu and Malayalam do have similarities. As far as Sanskrit is considered, Telugu directly originated from Sanskrit whereas Malayalam originated from Tamil which originated from Sanskrit. So the major difference between them is that Telugu is as old as Tamil but Malayalam is comparatively new. Nevertheless, the similarities have developed a bond between the people belonging to two states.

  1. Movies

Kerala and Andhra Pradesh may not be neighbors but they are connected through the medium of movies. Telugu movie industry is generally known as the Tollywood and Malayalam movie industry is known as Mollywood. Ever since cinemas were introduced in south India, Telugu actors act in Malayalam movies and vice versa. It’s true that through movies we often develop a strange connection with the movie stars. The Malayalam actors who have acted in Telugu movies and were able to establish that connection are Nayanthara, Anupama Parameshwaran, Nithya Menon. This has made a soft spot or curiousness about Kerala in the hearts of Telugu audience. In fact, it is a mutual thing. Telugu actresses like Madhavi has acted in some remarkable Malayalam movies and won a place in the heart of Malaya lees as well. In addition, quite often Malayalam movies get dubbed into Telugu and vice versa. This trend also helps to establish a relationship with each other and a desire to visit the place.

However, we often travel for experiencing a foreignness and travel itself is considered an opportunity to learn and grow. Some of the exotic things of Kerala are listed below which the people of Andhra Pradesh can look forward to while visiting Kerala:

  1. Houseboat cruising through backwaters

Kerala tour packages from Mumbai

Backwaters of Kerala have become iconic to Kerala. Kerala is world-famous for its tranquil backwaters and it is something you can see only in Kerala. Thus, it is one of the must-visit spots in Kerala. There are so many houseboats available at all price levels and you can choose the one according to your budget. In any case, that sail through the calm and peaceful backwaters of Kerala beholding the amazing views of lush greenery on its banks will fill your heart with peacefulness and helps you to unwind the stress accumulated from your daily life as a natural process. This is especially useful for the ones on honeymoon packages in Kerala as they can relax and get rejuvenated after the tiring wedding festivities.

  1. Watch a Kathakali performance

Kathakali is Kerala’s own art form where the performers with painted faces sway to the rhythms of folk music. They also use hand movements. A Kathakali performance can be so impressionable as the whole attire is in a bright red color. However, the focus of the performance is to communicate a story often selected from Indian epics to the audience. There are so many cultural centers in Kerala where Kathakali shows happen. It would be great if you can go and watch any.

Martial arts depict expression and skill and are often attributed to South Eastern countries like China, Japan, and Korea. Kalaripayattu is a martial art of India. In fact, this wonderful combination of a physical, mental and perceptive form of arts was born in the state of Kerala in India. Kalaripayattu incorporates yogic perfection of postures and strength. This skilled art is however also practiced in the adjacent parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, northeastern Sri lank and among the Malaya lee community of Malaysia. The audience always feels thrilled on seeing the high-flying acrobatics, fluid water like movements and weaponry and the art of using it. The place for the training of Kalaripayattu is given is known as the ‘kalari’.  The various styles of Kalari are chaattom (jumping), ottam (running), marichil (somersault), so forth and so on.  Weapons used for Kalaripayattu are swords, dagger, spears, maces, etc. and the various attacking styles are kicking, grappling and striking and are done with and without the weapons. As a tourist, you can have great fun in watching those fights. In fact, you can also enroll for a short course for beginners.

  1. Shake hands with tuskers

Kerala tour packages from Bangalore

Kerala is famous for its elephant population. The elephants in Kerala are supposed to have a distinct beauty and mightiness. Elephant safaris are available in and around almost all tourist attractions in Kerala. However, the best place to spend some time with elephants is the elephant reserve in Konni in the district of Pathanamthitta. This is basically an elephant training center and there will be elephants of all age groups. Not only can you enjoy elephant safaris you can even try a hand in feeding and bathing the baby elephants present there. In the reserve, there is also a river where you can go on boating in circular bamboo baskets. It would be such a marvelous feeling as you sail away through the water amid the forests. In the middle of the river, the boatman may give a surprising spin to make the boating a little adventurous too.
