An Unexpected Office Tour to Wayanad

From morning till noon we all were behind our hectic assignments and busy with several files and documents. Everyone was feeling so hungry that each one was praying to lord to make the 10’o clock into 1’o clock. However, by 11’o clock we were able to quench our thirst by sipping hot tea (some had hot coffee). After working for 2 hours we were really tired as soon as the long hand of the clock reached 12 and the small one on 1 we ran to our refreshment room. We were in a hurry. Each one of us started unboxing their lunch boxes. The aromatic scent of delicious homemade foods took us to another world. While savouring the scrumptious delicacies suddenly we heard a beep sound. It was nothing but a notification of a message from my phone. I just got up from my place to take the phone which I had kept on the juice table. By scrolling on the phone I occupied my place. Seeing the smile on my face my friends inquired the matter. They wanted to know the reason behind my smile. I showed them the images of my friends’ honeymoon. The pictures were really amusing and lovely commented by my friends. Seeing the picture one of my friends had a doubt whether the place is Wayanad in Kerala. I messaged her whether his assumption is correct or wrong. Within seconds she replied yes. The picture which they clicked in front of the heart-shaped lake more popularly known as Cupid Lake was really amazing. Seeing her romantic photos inspired us to plan a trip to the same place in Kerala. But we all had a doubt whether the place is exclusively made for honeymooners. He said that he does not know much. He got the name while surfing the internet as part of the tour the previous day.

 Our tour guide told there is no myth related to the Chain Tree but a true story. The incident happened during the British administration. As he had aforementioned the district was fully forested to know the shortest route to reach the district once a British General seek help from a local Adivasi boy named Karinthandan. He showed the easiest way to reach the place. After understanding the route he killed the poor innocent boy so that he could acquire the credit. Years later Karinthandan’s ghost started haunting the villagers and visitors. Frightened people approached a priest and asked him to do something to get rid of the ghost. The spirit chanted prayers and sealed the ghost inside a tree using a chain. Over the years the chain started growing along with the chain. Till now nobody knows the science behind it. In the memory of Karinthandan every year local people conduct a rally by honouring him as the first martyr of Wayanad.

After hearing the story we were really interested to visit the place. The tree is seen on the Lakkidi highway. After visiting the chain tree we moved to Kalpetta over there we witnessed the spectacular beauty of cascading waterfalls at Soochipar (Sentinel falls), Kanthapara falls and Meenmutty falls. We clicked photographs at Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.  After 2 days of the trip, we returned back to our hometown. The stunning beauty of Wayanad is beyond the words. If I get a chance I will definitely visit the place again.

The Miraculous Stories that Made Me a Strong Believer of St. Sebastian of Kanjoor

Don’t ever think that lying at the bottom of the country; Kerala will remain unpopular among the Indians. I have been always surprised by what may be the reason behind such large popularity? Later I realized that it may be the colourful festivals and unique culture and traditions. And it is true. The state is blessed with 14 districts and each district is known for its dazzling festivals. Irrespective of the religion and creed all the natives together celebrate the occasions in a grand way. Thus make the state different from other places in the country. It is being a long time since my mother was wishing to attend the famous church festival of St. Sebastian at Kanjoor church located in Ernakulum district in Kerala. I just asked her where she heard the name and what the peculiarity of the church is. She asked me whether I remember the day when my cousin (i.e. my mom’s nephew) told me about the church and the miracles happened over there. I said I don’t exactly remember what he said but I know that he is permanently settled in Kanjoor with his family for years. She said every year the St. Sebastian’s festival takes place in the month of January in St. Mary’s Church at Kanjoor. She also said that the saint is very powerful. I was amazed at how he could be powerful when the main deity of the church is Mother Mary. And I also asked her to share any of the stories if she was able to recollect from her memory. Oh! Why not I will definitely she replied (from her words I understood she was desperately waiting for someone to share the stories as she got me she was very happy).

The famous St. Mary’s Church at Kanjoor which is located on the banks of Periyar River was built in the year AD 1001. Angry ruler commanded his warriors to throw all the saluting mortars (Kathina Vedi) into the river. The warriors did accordingly. After returning to the mansion the mortars started bursting. The furious ruler scolded his disciples for not obeying his commands. They said they never disobeyed his words and asked him to go near to the river. By seeing the mortars bursting in the river he realized his mistake and went to the church and paid obeisance. He offered Elephant Lamp (Ana Vilakku) made out of from an alloy of five metals (Pancha Loha).

Followed to it one more incident also took place. Years later the ruler asked to demolish the gatehouse (padipura) of the church. As soon as the demolishing started the elephant of the palace (Kovilakam) started destroying the gatehouse of the palace. Understanding his mistake the ruler apologized and donated a perpetual lamp (Keda Vilaku) to the church and for meeting the expense of the oil the ruler gave permission to possess the paddy filed of the palace without paying tax.

Another miracle that took place during the colonial period in the 18th century. Tipu Sultan visited Kanjoor and decided to destroy the St. Mary’s church. People over there begged the Tipu Sultan to not to demolish the church. If he attempted to do so the saint will punish him. But he didn’t hear anyone’s words. He even tested the power of the saint. He looked at the statue and asked ‘if the statue has divine powers let it speak to me’. Soon the statute replied ‘won’t you allow me to rest’. Hearing the voice Tipu Sultan left the place without destroying the church. And the incident has been mentioned on the walls in front of the church.

A Lunch with my Brother-in-law on a fine Sunday

As usual, I woke up at 6 am in the morning; you might be thinking what is there to mention if the activity is a daily routine. It was not like an ordinary working day. As Sunday is declared as a national holiday in all the countries except in the Middle East regions, I was not willing to wake up early because I really wanted to compensate for all my pending nights of sleep. But my mother is a strong Christian believer that forced me to attend the morning holy mass. During the mass when the priest asked to handover all your prayers to almighty I will be the only person who prayed to somehow ask the priest to end the service. Soon after the holy mass, I ran to my house. Over there my granny was desperately waiting for me with a list of unending household chores. I was so angry that I didn’t respond to her. By that time my parents reached home and I inquired what’s happening in our house is there any special program being organized which I am unaware of? As I had already lost my temper they didn’t test my patience and answered my question. They told me, they had invited my cousin who recently got married to a sales manager working in Dubai and they had informed me about it a week before. I was also asked to recollect about it with a cool mind. Followed to it my mom served the breakfast and called me for savouring it. After seeing my favourite ‘up puma’ on the table my mind was delighted and I started conversing with my family in a normal mood. While having breakfast we all used to share all the incidents that happened in the last week. Sometimes our conversation used to prolong for hours. But on that day my dad reminded me to wind up the discussion as our guest would arrive soon for lunch. Soon after breakfast, I assisted my mom and granny while my little brother helped my dad. After the preparation of the starters, we finished all our kitchen chores and moved to change our dresses. By 11 am our special guests, Sandhya and Rajeev arrived and my dad asked to serve the fresh juice which we had prepared for them. As I am afraid of carrying the tray with glasses, I didn’t move from my position. So I was staring at my mom. We all know that if the beginning is bad everything will be bad. As my dad is short-tempered I did not want to spoil my good impression in front of my new brother-in-law I soon ran to the kitchen and returned with the tray. My brother-in-law was very friendly and generous understood my discomfort and asked to place the tray on the table. I smiled at him with gratitude.

 My cousin (whom we call ‘Akka’) introduced each of us to her husband (whom we call ‘machaan’). Without any starting trouble, he mingled with us as he knew us from years. My dad inquired about his works and Dubai life. Meanwhile we three young girls (I, mom and granny) of our house served all the dishes on the dining table. My granny invited them to the table by interrupting their conversation. It was for the first time he tasted the south Indian foods prepared in Coimbatore style. He was pleased and praised my mom and granny for their exceptional talent. While having lunch he inquired me and my brother’s studies and our ambitions too. The Dazzling Munnar After Devastating Floods

Kerala the ‘god’s own country’ has always been on the top list of most sought tourist destinations. The pristine beaches, tranquilizing backwaters, amazing biodiversity, historical monuments and many more lure the hearts of travelers across the globe. Each season has something new to gift its visitors. Many eminent writers have penned down the stupendous beauty of the state through poems, essays, novels, and articles. It always was being my dream to visit the tourists’ spots of the state. Many of my friends had visited the hotspots like Munnar, Thekkady, and Kollam and used to showcase the photographs clicked over there. Seeing those lovely pictures I used to feel very sad about not being part of it. Each time we plan a trip to Munnar some unexpected emergencies would hinder it.

But this time we decided to spend a few days in the misty mountains of Munnar. For that, we searched for the best travel operators that curate exceptionally good tour packages to Kerala. The place which we were taken first according to the tour package was to the thick green plantations of tea. The spectacular arrangement of tea leaves touched our hearts deeply. The aromatic scent of the tea leaves took us to another world. Over there we saw many foreigners who came there to celebrate their romantic days. Apart from western people we also interacted with people hailing from different states of India. I and my sister indulged in plucking tea leaves with female workers by carrying a long basket.

From there we moved to Mattupetty dam. Over there we were engaged in boating. For the first time, we were seeing people boating in a dam!!! One could also capture the splendid view of nature while boating inside the dam.  Followed to it we savored mouth-watering dishes prepared in traditional Kerala style. By the evening we reached the Eravikulam National Park to observe the various rare species of animals and birds. Also, it is home to Strobilanthes flower (known as NeelaKurinji flower in the Malayalam language). It is a lavender-blue colored flower which blooms once in 12 years. It last bloomed in September 2018 but due to hazardous flood, the number of tourists declined rapidly. Most of the animals were unknown to us and our tour guide who accompanied us explained all the important information about the species including their lifestyles.

We trek to the Nilgiri hills and clicked the beautiful picture of Nilgiri tahr. We really had wonderful family time on the hill. As it was getting darker we were asked to return back to the resort. On reaching the resort we filled our tummies with delicious Kerala foods served in hot.

The next day also we continued our sightseeing in Munnar. I and my sister had a great time at the Echo point. Not only we but many newly married couples and lovers were calling out each other’s names. In between sightseeing, we also did the shopping. Our mother was busy collecting homemade tea powders in various flavors and also chocolates, spices, and many more things. I and my sister were busy collecting ornaments made out of shells and various showcase items. How could we end our shopping without buying a gorgeous hat? Our dad was engaged in a deep conversation with the local farmers for understanding the various methods of farming.

After spending one more day in Munnar we packed our bags to our home town. After visiting the place we understood most of the news which we heard about the Munnar were only exaggerated form.
